    1. The NAEYC is a great resource for childcare standards. I've been a member of NAEYC years and its been a help during my career path. Currently I have 3 NAEYC Accreditted centers, and I love the high quality standards.

    2. I was disappointed in the National Child Care Association web site. Much of it required a member login. While I understand that membership "value" is important, it is the territorial and balkanized world of non-profit entities that discourages collaboration and ultimately leads to a failed agenda. We must learn, particularly during these economic times, to have the courage to take chances and demonstrate our excellence. This means opening our doors to all like-minded individuals in service of the greater good.

    3. I also wanted to comment on Andrea's post. I am a part of a group of dedicated NAEYC members that is dissatisfied with the current direction of NAEYC accreditation.
I am concerned that NAEYC has taken accreditation to a point where it is now a part of privileged society. I know of more than a few respected colleagues that are disappointed in the new NAEYC accreditation process.
When it becomes burdensome to the point that programs serving low to moderate income private paying families can no longer even consider seeking accreditation - then we have taken a grave mis-step in our quest for credibility at the expense of the children and families that we serve.

    4. I too was a little disappointed that NAEYC web page requires membership to search particular information. However, NAEYC provides great information. Becoming a member may not be such a bad idea.

    5. NAEYC is where I became a real early educator. I loved attending conferences (NAEYC, California AEYC, Southern California, etc...). I learned more at these conferences than I did in any classroom. The presenters were always passionate about their topic. The ideas felt cutting edge. It was as if I was invited to see the future of early education at many of the workshops that I attended. I will be at NAEYC in Orlando in November... and even though it means I will probably lose some points due to missed or hurried assignments, it is worth it. I and a colleague are actually presenting a topic at the conference - father involvement. I hope that you join. I think that you will be very satisfied by what it means to you as a leader. If not NAEYC, then join one of the other professional associations. It's what you would expect of your doctor or attorney, isn't it? To be a part of their professional association?
